Weightlifting, trumpet or similar instrument playing and tight neckties could cause glaucoma because of the pressure that could be created in the circulation of air through the body. This is due to what is called intraocular pressure that is caused because of Valsava maneuver where air would be forced against a closed windpipe increasing pressure in the chest area. This means fluctuations caused because of pressure around the eye could cause problems. The report said the optic nerve tolerates steady pressure much better than fluctuating pressure. In addition, aerobic activities such as running, biking, and nonaerobic activities such as weightlifting increase or decrease pressure in the eyeball area. No prevention method was suggested except that holding breath for a prolonged period and repeatedly should be done in moderation.
