The Iraqis are still Staggering to Carry the Brunt

There was a disappointment when only one thousand soldiers made themselves available when the U.S. asked for four thousand to shore up security in Baghdad. One of the reasons might be the distance involved as some of the recruits were from the provinces and will have to travel some distance to make it to Baghdad. There were some acts of atrocities that had taken place by people wearing the Iraqi’s army uniform where close to 27 people were shot killed while attending a wedding, which does not do any good to the image of the army. In spite of it all, the country’s Prime Minster had traveled to New York to attend the UN summit and had talked with U.S. officials. He had pledged to the international community to expedite the promised aid package that would amount into billions of dollars.

Yet, according to officials, the Iraqi army lacks means of transportation to effect a quick deployment when the need comes. More planes and armored vehicles are needed to undertake effective deployment. When there is a lack of efficient deployment process the security work could suffer as there will be neighborhoods that will have to go without a security presence, and the overall perception is things are not for sure looking rosy for the army even if they might get better in the future.
